JOEL’S MONTHLY MOVIE PICK

THE LIFE OF CHUCK

The world got ya down lately? Need a little pick me up from all the crazy shit going on (personal life, everything in the news, everything that’s not in the news but probably should be, etc.)? The Life of Chuck might be the perfect “pick me up” for you. Fair warning though, “pick me up” does NOT always equal “good ass time”. And The Life of Chuck is not without sadness and challenging topics and hard to watch visuals and uncomfortable conversations and just every day, real life shit that we can all relate to. I already know what you’re thinking. “How in the hell is this is a “pick me up” film if the whole thing is all sad and stuff”.

HOPEFUL ⋆ SURREAL ⋆ MYSTERY

  • Good question honestly. Well… for me at least, the best kind of pick me up movie isn’t the one that makes you forget about all your problems (although that can be nice at times), it’s the one that helps you realize you’re going to be okay, problems and all. The one that changes the way you look at the world for the better and the people within it. The one that makes you feel just slightly more equipped to take on every day life. The one that makes you go, “Welp….at some point in my life shit is gonna hit the fan and I’m gonna do my best and that will be enough and I will be okay”. And I know right now that doesn’t sound all that inspiring but small moments like this that can help you through the tough times, help show you a small glimmer of hope, THAT is what a true, honest to god pick-me-up film is. And The Life of Chuck does exactly that.

Now, you still might watch this and leave the theater and think “Man, that wasn’t really for me” or “Wow, that was pretty cheesy” or even “No idea what was going on with that first part”. But I double dog dare you to walk out of that theater and not feel sliiiightly better about life in general. Even if it’s a microscopic amount better (a win is a win after all). I’m not saying this movie is going to change your entire life or solve all your problems or anything like that...but it might? Even if there is a 1% chance of that happening, isn’t that worth the 12 bucks?

P.S. For the record, yes, I’m keeping things incredibly vague about the movie itself on purpose because the less you know going in, the better. What I will tell you is that it’s directed by sad horror boi Mike Flanagan (The Haunting of Hill House, Midnight Mass, Doctor Sleep) and it’s adapted from a non-horror Stephen King novella. That alone is reason enough to see it, two masters of horror stepping away from the genre they’re known for to give us something that feels both new and familiar in all the best ways. Maybe bring tissues?
