JOEL’S MONTHLY MOVIE PICK

THE NAKED GUN

I still remember watching Airplane for the first time with my parents and not understanding that it was possible for a movie to literally feature some form of a joke or gag every minute or so. My tiny pea-brain couldn’t comprehend the speed at which jokes were being presented as I had never seen anything like that before. I probably missed half of the jokes, didn’t understand even more but I still very distinctly remember having the time of my life watching it. Eventually I stumbled upon movies like Hot Shots and The Naked Gun (1988) - also created by “ZAZ”, the same people who made Airplane - but it wasn’t long before I quickly ran out of these joke-a-minute movies. They just stopped existing…

  • Even parody films like Scary Movie weren’t nearly the same. They just felt lazy having all their jokes front and center with nothing fun happening in the background. Little to no effort was put into the way visual gags were presented. It was sad man! Movies like The Naked Gun (1988) just straight up disappeared from our culture. I have done 0 actual research on this but I’d say the last film of this kind was maybe BASEketball (even that might be a stretch) and that came out in 1998.

But all this changes on August 1st. The Naked Gun has returned and it’s such a fantastic throwback to those early Zucker Abrahams Zucker films. All the ridiculousness is played extremely straight and serious. Liam Neeson is a fantastic (and highly underrated) comedic actor and does a great job taking on the role from the goat Leslie Nielsen. And maybe most importantly (outside of it being legitimately laugh out loud funny which it is), you can tell how much love and care the creators of the new film had for the originals and how much effort went into recapturing the spirit of what ZAZ did so brilliantly back in the day.

I’m sure others will feel differently but for my money they absolutely killed it. Making a movie like this in 2025 (and not for streaming mind you but for the big screen) is such a massive gamble so the fact they pulled it off at all is genuinely inspiring and worth celebrating. Go see this movie in a theater (plays great with a full crowd) so we can revive this type of comedy and get more classics like this for years to come.
